The legend of Kitezh speaks to a painful time in the history of the East, for it is inextricably linked to the Mongol invasions and subjugation.
The story tells of an invasion by Batu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, who came to capture the town of Kitezh. The people of the city did not attempt to resist the Mongol Horde, choosing instead to seek the shelter of the town Church and praying there for their delivery.
It seems their prayers were heard, for when the Mongols approached they saw Kitezh sink into the lake before their very eyes. These days, only those of pure heart and mind can find the secret path that leads into the town.
