With this spell the cleric directly invokes the aid of his god. He asks
for a specific type of creature to serve him. He then makes appropriate
sacrifices, and after a while (if the sacrifices are acceptable) the
requested creature appears.

A cleric can only have one creature at a time summoned by this spell.
Potential servants are either good or evil, and will only serve a cleric
of like alignment.

A wide variety of creatures has been summoned in this way. There are
several dozen possibilities. As the caster gains levels, more options
are available to him. All clerics who know this spell can summon a manes
(if evil) or a lares (if good); these are the souls of the recently
deceased, and make adequate but not exceptional warriors. More powerful
fighters are available, as well as creatures that serve a range of other
functions. Records of the beings that have been summoned with the spell
are scattered, and can be found throughout the world in temples or with
sages.

When the summoned being is no longer needed, he can be sent away
effortlessly with the 'dismiss' command.
