This spell opens a portal between you and the target of the spell. This
target can be a sentient or your own familiar. If a second gate is cast
upon one end of the portal by a mage of power equal or superior to that
of the original traveler, the second gate will supersede the first, see
example below. Gating between continents is only possible on certain
dates (cf. Almanac Magicka, MTP, yearly editions)

Apprentice creates a gate from the A to B: entering at A will bring you to
B, entering at B will bring you to A.
Master creates a new gate, from C to B. Now entering at either A or C will
bring you to B, but entering at B will bring you to C, since this is the
strongest portal.
