Your alignment is a measure of how good or bad you are. It's visible in
'score'. Two kinds of things alter one's alignment: one's actions, and
handling good or evil magic.

Killing intelligent good creatures will move your alignment very rapidly
towards evil. Killing evil creatures will move you back towards good, but
more slowly. This second process is especially slow if the creatures in
question are so weak as to present no real danger to you (that is, anything
that is CONSIDERs to easier than "The perfect match."). Killing neutral
creatures produces varying effects depending on the circumstances - follow
your conscience.

Destroying demons as well as powerful undead or evil extraplanar creatures
will improve your alignment faster than killing mundane evil creatures.
Clearing the lands of aggressive evil creatures is also considered by the
gods to be a very benevolent act. On the other hand, killing angels and
the like will cause your alignment to plummet.

Casting spells from the necromancy stratum causes a slow decay of alignment,
while casting spells from the healing stratum causes a slow increase. See
'help strata' for more on this.

Alignment is primarily important for its effect on a few spells: 'dispel
evil', 'dispel good', 'grace' and 'supplication' are examples.
