Fortresses and other centers of population often have some sort of alarm&lt;br /&gt;
system.  In the event of marauding adventurers, watchful members of these&lt;br /&gt;
communities will quickly spot the attack and run to set off the alarm.  Or,&lt;br /&gt;
sometimes, the alarm will be activated automatically when the raiders &lt;br /&gt;
trigger some sort of pressure plate or other trap.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Once the alarm activates, it is the duty of all members of the community&lt;br /&gt;
to spring to their common defense.  Wizards and other spellcasters should&lt;br /&gt;
start preparing defensive spells; additional guard patrols should be mounted; &lt;br /&gt;
peaceable types may even join in and gird themselves for battle!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you haven't been paying attention and need to know if there's currently&lt;br /&gt;
an alarm in progress, the 'listen' command will tell you.  Generally, when&lt;br /&gt;
you enter or leave a community in a state of alarm, you'll know it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On rare occasions the attacking force may manage to either disable the alarm&lt;br /&gt;
through clever thievery or slay or otherwise incapacitate that brave citizen &lt;br /&gt;
who, realizing the attack is underway, is running to sound the alarm.  &lt;br /&gt;
For this reason it is vital to Be Alert At All Times!&lt;br /&gt;
